Some polynomial extremal problems which emerged in the twentieth century

چکیده
Most of the “extremal problems” of Harmonic (or Fourier) Analysis which emerged before the year 2000 were actually born in the twentieth century, and their emergences were scattered throughout that century, including the two world war periods. A great many of these problems pertain to polynomials, trigonometric polynomials and (finite) exponential sums. Writing a reasonably complete monograph on this huge subject (even if we choose to restrict it to polynomials only) would be a monumental task, although the literature does indeed contain some valuable monographs on various aspects of the subject. The present text just touches upon a number of extremal problems on polynomials and trigonometric polynomials, with the hope of expanding this same text in the near future to a much larger version, and ultimately to a “reasonably complete” monograph (but only with the help of other mathematicians.) The theory of polynomials on the unit circle is, of course, part of classical Fourier Analysis, studied with the tools of real and complex analysis. But it also leads to studying polynomials on the (cyclic) finite subgroups of the unit circle, and this is part of Fourier Analysis on finite groups. In many ways this leads to cyclotomy, which is part of Number Theory and Algebra. Also, some combinatorial designs (cyclic difference sets) show up in connection with this study. Thus the analysis of polynomials and trigonometric polynomials, even in one single variable, is at the crossroad of many important areas of contemporary mathematics. It is also much connected with some areas of engineering, such as signal processing. 202 Bahman Saffari / Some polynomial extremal problems which emerged in. . .

Twentieth Century Urbanization in Bangladesh and a Spell of High and Unsustainable Urban Growth
Bangladesh is still a low urbanized country although it experienced a rising trend in the level of urbanization throughout the twentieth century and had a remarkably high urban growth immediately after its independence in 1971. The country recorded the highest ever annual average growth rate (9.04) and percentage of interval variation (137.57%) in an urban population in 1974; thereafter, growth...
متن کاملRapithwin, the Demon of winter and Baba Barfi An Archetypal Battle of Survival and Transformation In Iranian Children’s Literature of the Twentieth Century
Mythological and folkloric heritages of nations have often been credited with exclusively distinct identities within the realms of literary criticism. Arguing that in a nation like Iran, the firmly visible borders that have conventionally defined mythology in disparity from folklore have been disturbed, this paper considers these two entities as intertwined and their accentuated differe...
متن کاملThe Role of the German Researchers in the Formation of Islamic Art Studies
In the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the increasing interest of the Europeans in the culture of the East, the first articles on the Islamic art and culture were appeared in German-speaking countries. In the mid nineteenth century, some entries in German encyclopedias were devoted to Islamic art, and from the end of the century, the first monographs on Islamic architecture and orname...
متن کاملMuslim Intellectuals and the Perennial Philosophy in the Twentieth Century
This paper will examine how Muslim intellectuals, as a result of their attachment to the doctrine of Divine Unity (taw¤hīd), the Quran, Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, and the doctrines and methods of Sufism, were largely responsible for the restating of the perennial philosophy in the West in the twentieth century. The article consists of four sections: an introduction to the term 'philosophia...
متن کاملMethods for Solving Extremal Problems in Practice
During the 20th century there has been an incredible progress in solving theoretically hard problems in practice. One of the most prominent examples is the DPLL algorithm and its derivatives to solve the Boolean satisfiability problem, which can handle instances with millions of variables and clauses in reasonable time, notwithstanding the theoretical difficulty of solving the problem. Despite ...
